Definitive Performance September 19, 2014 By Morris Reagan (Madison, MS) See All My Reviews "To describe this as the "definitive" performance would be overreach to the purist, since we really have no way of knowing how Bach envisioned the performance of his Passion. But in any case, The St. Thomas Choir and soloists present the most satisfying performance of the Matthew Passion that I've ever seen and heard, either live or on video. It's not just the splendid musicianship, but also the way in which Herr Biller conveys the spirit of the work to his choir and soloists. The message of the Passion is transmitted not only in the music, but also in the demeanor of Biller, his choir and soloists. They are all deeply involved and plumb Bach's message at its deepest level. As appropriate in any performance of the Passion, no bows are taken and the audience does NOT applaud at the conclusion of the piece. I own 3 different DVDs of the St. Matthew Passion, and this stands out from all the others." Report Abuse
