Notes and Editorial Reviews

Recorded 1957 and 1960.

That Hans Knappertsbusch (1888-1965) was one of the great German conductors of his day cannot be disputed, and from his extensive recorded legacy we are very pleased to present this selection of the master conducting music somewhat lighter in vein than he is largely remembered for. But this selection proves undoubtedly that Knappertsbusch was an equal master of the lighter repertoire as he was of the most serious masterpieces. In this set of performances Knappertsbusch conducts the great Vienna Philharmonic and the recording quality is remarkably fine for the period from the late 1950s. A truly historic and most welcome issue.

Such bliss I thought was only existant in heaven! January 12, 2013 By J. Shabman (West Allis, WI) See All My Reviews "Hans Knappertsbusch has been an admired conductor of mine since hearing his recording of Wagner - Parsifal from Bayreuth in 1962. He is also a hero of mine having cursed Hitler to his face before personally exiling himself from his native Germany in 1936. Although he never conducted at the Metropolitan Opera it would have been a dream come true for me. This recording is only a small example displying his magnificence. Thank you for the opportunity to now own a copy." Report Abuse
