Notes and Editorial Reviews

The name Strauss has become synonymous with the waltz. Their luxurious musical confections embodied the spirit of 19th-century Vienna and elevated the form to a higher level of expression. But it was Johann Strauss, Jr., an enormously talented violinist, conductor, and composer, who earned the sobriquet "Waltz King" by virtue of his genius for melodies and the sophisticated charm and rhythmic vitality of his music. Evocative compositions such as 'Tales from the Vienna Woods,' 'Vienna Blood,' and his most popular work, 'The Blue Danube Waltz,' are almost symphonic in nature and transformed a popular dance into a legitimate art form. Eugene Ormandy, aided by the characteristically lush sound of the Philadelphia Orchestra, perfectly captures Read more the elegance and grace of these and all the other works included in this collection resulting in a delightful treat for the ear.
