Notes and Editorial Reviews

Sadao Bekku was born in Tokyo and graduated from Tokyo University with a degree in theoretical physics. Since childhood, Bekku had always loved the traditional European classical music favorites, so at the age of 22, he began to study music theory. By 1948, having succeeded in winning a prize in a Tokyo music competition, he chose to devote himself completely to music. He decided to study in Paris where he lived from 1951 to 1954. He was a student in the composition class of Darius Milhaud at the National Conservatory of Paris. He also studied with Olivier Messiaen and Jean Rivier and was awarded prizes in fugue and composition. His own musical style is rather eclectic, sometimes tonal, sometimes modal, sometimes chromatic, always emotional Read more and melodic. It may seem curious that such a composer who has been trained as a scientist, is not interested in electronic music, and yet as he himself acknowledges, it is precisely his theoretical background which prevents him from embracing this sort of music. It is because in music, he is looking for something emotional, a quality that is absent in electronic music. Therefore, it is most natural for him to write songs and operas (three so far). Currently, he is professor of musicology at Chuo University and teaches music theory at Toho Academy of Music. This is because it is extremely difficult in Japan to earn a living solely by composition. Read less
