Werner Hink is the concert master of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the leader of the Vienna String Quartet and the leader of the New Vienna Octet. He was born in Vienna in 1943 and studied the violin at the Municipal Conservatory of Vienna. He then studied at the Vienna Academy of Music, graduating first in his class in 1962. In 1964, he was engaged by the Vienna Philharmonic as a member of the first violin section. In 1968, he became the principal violinist and in 1974, the concert master. Since 1964, when he first joined the orchestra, he created the Vienna String Quartet with other members from the orchestra. In 1982, he became professor of violin at the Vienna Conservatory, succeeding Franz Samohyl, who had been his teacher.
