Notes and Editorial Reviews

Of all the musical superstars, few have so readily bestowed their aura on their colleagues as freely as pianist-composer Franz Liszt. His compassionate disposition is further borne out by the fact that he forsook the glitter of his concert tours at a relatively early age in favor of charity events. Liszt met Franz Schubert as a little boy in Vienna in 1821. To him, Schubert was simply ìthe most poetic composer who ever lived.î His piano arrangements of the Schubert Lieder mostly date from his years as a traveling virtuoso (1839-46), including the summers spent on the island of Nonnenwerth on the Rhine that marked his gradual shift in orientation from the French to the German culture. The solo songs were known after Schubertís death to only Read more a small circle, and to some extent at least, Liszt sought to make them better known through his arrangements for piano. But he must have had a more personal mission too, since he was to produce piano arrangements of some sixty Schubert Lieder in all, many of them several times. In his piano arrangements, Liszt was more concerned with capturing the musical idea than with documenting the original work. Liszt never ceased to be amazed by Schubertís masterly interweaving of the vocal melody and accompaniment. In arranging the Schubert Lieder, Liszt was also enchanted by their ability to express the poetic content by instrumental means. Most important of all was to capture the right mood. In some cases, he was motivated by a technical keyboard change, but for the most part, he kept his virtuosic ambitions in check in his Lieder arrangements. Read less
