North/South offers two releases of the music of Larry Bell this month; one orchestral and one for piano. Larry Bell received his DMA from The Juilliard School, working with Vincent Persichetti and Roger Sessions, and later taught in the Pre-College Division. A member of the composition faculty of the Boston Conservatory since 1980, Bell also teaches at the New England Conservatory of Music.This recording is of his orchestral and wind ensemble music. The largest work on this disc is his Idumea Symphony (Symphony No. 2). The title (Idumea) is the Biblical name of a hymn tune taken from The Sacred Harp, an important 19th-century hymn book used widely in the South.
