This famous 1992 performance of Handel’s great masterpiece was filmed at the Point Theatre, Dublin, on the 250th anniversary of the work’s premiere, which took place in Dublin on 13 April 1742. The occasion was marked by a celebratory performance, staged in a specially-decorated Point Theatre in Dublin, commemorating the fact that the first-ever performance took place in that city of 13 April 1742.
In the presence of such dignatories as Mary Robinson (then President of Ireland) and Bob Geldof, the performance was given by Sir Neville Marriner and his legendary Academy of St
Martin-in-the-Fields, supporting an international line-up of soloists - Sylvia McNair, Anne Sofie von Otter, Jerry Hadley, Michael Chance and Robert Lloyd. Broadcast live around the world, the event was also taped for home video release.
Since that occasion, both the CD and VHS have been best-selling releases, and now for the first time, this performance is available on DVD, benefitting from much enhanced picture quality, the addition of surround sound and the ability to select favourite tracks via DVD chaptering.
The performance is supported by an informative background film For Ever and Ever (22 mins), explaining the circumstances behind the composition and the work’s early impact, and featuring contributions from the popular Handel scholar, Professor H.C. Robbins Landon, as well as from Sir Neville Marriner himself.
