Notes and Editorial Reviews

AGNUS DEI II, a new collection of choral music from The Choir of New College, Oxford, bears the appropriate subtitle, MUSIC TO SOOTHE THE SOUL. As enriching as the first volume, MUSIC OF INNER HARMONY, this new volume also spans virtually the whole of Western music, ranging from William Byrd (1543-1623) to Frank Martin (1890-1974).
Although the term 'Agnus Dei' comes from the Ordinary of the Roman Catholic mass, this collection also includes pieces that aren't drawn from liturgical sources. The standout piece in this regard is Schubert's 'Gott ist mein Hirt,' a setting of the 23rd Psalm. This piece also comes as a surprise because of its rather light and airy style which is not in keeping with the general solemn style associated with
Read more sacred music (a classic example of the latter being Bruckner's motet 'Christus factus est' which is also included in this recording). Higginbottom has also provided some fresh arrangements, continuing the tradition of creating "new" choral works derived from instrumental pieces, a practice which dates back to the 16th century. Of interest is the movement taken from the incidental music of Bizet's 'L'Arlésienne', a secular piece reworked for liturgical purposes. Read less
