Highly enjoyable! September 12, 2014 By James Carleton (Camarillo, CA) See All My Reviews "The main knock on the music of Sir Arnold Bax is that it is often derivative of itself. Oh, but such marvelous derivation! Bax's strength is the ability to capture both a mood and a sense of place, in something as simple as an oboe figure. I came to Bax through his Tintagel, but quickly developed a love of every other piece of his. This collection presents material mostly unknown outside the United Kingdom, but it all shimmers or sighs, looms or glows, as the subject requires. The performances are all excellent: fully in control, but expansive and lush. The only negative is some less-than-perfect miking, but this does not detract much. All of this would make for excellent concert material, and it is a shame that most Americans, indeed most Terrans, will only hear this music on the radio or CD. This is a good CD with which to start one's exploration of Bax's soundscape." Report Abuse
