Notes and Editorial Reviews

EMI here issues for the first time three discs of early Mozart symphonies, taped by Tate and the ECO between 1985 and 1993. Together with the nine discs already issued, they bring the works total to 51. Three are of “questionable authenticity,” including one of my favorites: Symphony No. 11, K 84. The word “complete” is not used in the packaging, and a booklet essay by Robin Golding reminds us that “complete” could mean as many as 71 Mozart symphonies, in one form or another. A chart would have clarified matters, but this is a Bargain Box, and the notes do a reasonable job of sorting out the various periods of Mozart’s career, and of showing a beginner where the symphonies fit into that poignantly brief agenda; if not offering much Read more illuminating commentary on individual works.

Tate stresses strength in Mozart, from the First Symphony to the “Jupiter.” As a result, many of the early works seem more substantial than we would expect from “the work of a very brilliant boy” as Andrew Huth puts it in the booklet. Even in a tiny work like Symphony No. 47, K 97, Tate has you thinking of Beethoven 7, in the Presto finale, and these early discs make for compelling listening, as we’re drawn into the brilliant boy’s private world of endless invention and exhilaration. More conscious charm could be applied to slow movements, but that isn’t Tate’s way. I think he and the orchestra get things about right here.

In the “mature” symphonies, Tate is up against all the competition we have swimming around in our memories, or lying on our shelves. These very consistent, expressive modern-instrument performances, with a small orchestra, sometimes recall the work of very different big-band Mozartians, such as Toscanini and Klemperer, but Tate goes his own way, very distinct from the warmer Marriner method, or the lithe, period-instruments feel of Hogwood, et. al., in the competing boxes. Outer movements are broad and powerful, slow movements weighty and direct. Add enough energy, as in the “Paris” symphony, and the result is very successful; but the “Prague” Symphony’s slow movement seems to last for ever. A hearing of the first movement of the “Haffner,” big-boned, steady, swaggering, and imposing, would probably tell you whether these performances are for you. Respect for the music’s greatness is always in evidence, be the composer boy or man.

Most of these discs were made at Abbey Road and sound fine, but the final pair was taped first, in a church in 1984. I like Britten and Fricsay in these two, but despite a harder sonic edge to my ears, these are among the best, most expansive readings in the whole set, and the finale of the “Jupiter” is a suitably grand, and proud occasion. Tate relates this music directly to the last movement of Beethoven’s Ninth, and we leave his set in awe of Mozart, once again. What in heaven would his next symphony have sounded like?

Glorious August 19, 2013 By Grayson Howard (Pittsburgh, PA) See All My Reviews "I have never written a review before and probably never will again. But this set of Mozart symphonies is worth every cent. The sonics are magnificent. By this I mean it is rich in in the bass and glorious in the highs. And the interpretations are so wonderful that one can listen to symphony after symphony. Mr. Jeffrey Tate and the English Chamber Orchestra are miraculous." Report Abuse
