Notes and Editorial Reviews

These performances can’t compete sonically with Boulez’s DG remakes (of Ravel especially), or Denève’s Debussy set for Chandos, but the set is more complete than either, and as good or better in straight comparisons in every single work. Martinon is still underrated, but he was a genius on the podium, nowhere more so than in the French repertoire that he specialized in (not entirely by choice) after his departure from Chicago. Aldo Ciccolini is the excellent soloist in the two Ravel concertos and the Debussy Fantaisie, and no less than Itzhak Perlman plays the violin in Tzigane, a performance that has never been bettered.

So what makes these interpretations so special? That’s easy to describe, and to hear. First, there
Read more is Martinon’s perfect pacing allied to consistently elegant phrasing and crisp rhythm. The opening of Iberia (first sound sample) offers a typical case in point. Next, there is his keen year for detail and for obtaining an unmatched translucency of texture. Consider the end of the complete Mother Goose ballet. Ever heard Ravel’s wonderfully magical harp part? You will here, and practically nowhere else–not with anything like this sort of clarity.

Look: there’s no shortage of great recordings of this music, including Martinon’s Chicago Ravel disc on RCA, and EMI has justifiably reissued these performances in numerous different ways over the years. But for once the attention really is justified. You can buy the entire set with total confidence that you’re getting the best. Sure, you’ll still want Cluytens/François in the Ravel Concertos, and I wouldn’t want to miss Boulez/Berlin’s Ravel remakes for DG, especially for the superior playing and sonics, but however mandatory those acquisitions might be, they are in addition to this set, not in preference.
