Notes and Editorial Reviews

Camille Saint-Saëns (1835- 1921), the French child prodigy composer, is probably best known for his piece "The Swan" from "Carnival of the Animals". But he was also a celebrated organist during the wave of French Romanticism of the 1800s. Magne Draagen, organist and choirmaster at Oslo Cathedral, opens with the composer's most frequently played work, the majestic "Prelude and Fugue in E Flat Major". We hear a total of six preludes and fugues, plus shorter pieces including an organ version of "The Swan". Draagen plays with freshness and confidence. The album, recorded in Katarina Church in Stockholm, reveals the greatness of Saint-Saëns as church musician and composer. -- Halgrim Read more Øistad- Gudbrandsdølen Read less
