Notes and Editorial Reviews

For someone who spent his entire life in relative obscurity close to his birthplace, Bach seems to have kept abreast of international currents in music rather well. Born in an age when Italian and French taste competed for primacy throughout Europe, Bach's compositional "mother tongue" was the German musical craft of his inherited tradition. Since the process of internationalizing French style had begun well before his own birth, German composers had already adopted the elegant French dance suite to their own ends, and indeed some German courts even had French orchestras. Likewise, Italian musicians and the concerto style traveled widely in Europe and drew much admiration. Bach, interested to hear every style and to take from it according Read more to its capacity to caress the ear or astonish the intellect, delighted in absorbing elements and making them his own. His success in fusing all three national styles - Italian, French and German - into a uniquely personal language of musical expression won him renown in his own time, and from the 19th century to our own time, scholars, performers and audiences have resoundingly credited this international fusion as the highest achievement of the Baroque.
