Notes and Editorial Reviews

BRAHMS Intermezzos: op. 76/3-4; op. 116/2 and 6; op. 117/1-3; op. 118/2; op. 119/1. Rhapsody (Lullaby), op. 119/4 Tisha Murvihill (hp) TISHA MURVIHILL 42003 (58:51)

Here’s a real oddity, a disc of Brahms intermezzos and one Rhapsody, transcribed by Tisha Murvihill, first harpist of the Calgary Philharmonic. Normally, I’m opposed to harp transcriptions of keyboard music—even if they’re playable on the instrument—unless Read more the performer is a great interpreter, so I was rather skeptical when I first put this on. But Murvihill is a fine musician and has certainly found her own way in playing this music.

As she points out in the notes, Murvihill got the idea one day when she looked over the shoulder of a pianist friend who was playing through the op. 118/2 intermezzo, and realized that it could be played on the harp. The instrument gives her performances a quiet delicacy, but they also have great style. They sing and communicate, and that in itself makes them worth listening to. I was especially impressed by the delicacy of the op. 116/4 intermezzo and the famous lullaby, which Murvihill plays with an incomparably ethereal quality. One would certainly not consider these the only recordings of the intermezzos to own, but they’re a really lovely alternative.
