Notes and Editorial Reviews
This set includes 9 CDs of material from live concerts that formed an integral part of Callas’s public career alongside her stage performances. In them she sang not only scenes and arias from her stage repertoire, but other pieces as well, including items by French composers such as Delibes, Charpentier and Massenet, that she never sang on stage. These recital performances are an invaluable addition to Callas’s recorded legacy and provide a unique insight into this great artist in the concert hall performing in front of an audience. The programme begins with extracts from concerts given in Rome in 1952 and San Remo in 1954 and broadcast by RAI in their famous and long-established Grandi Concerti Martini e Rossi series, and continues up to a

triumphant concert given in Paris in 1963. It concludes with an extract from a private rehearsal in 1976 when Callas was preparing to make a comeback that never eventuated. As a bonus, there is an extra CD containing an interview in English that Callas gave with the American commentator Edward Downes in December 1967 and January 1968 in New York. Read less
