Notes and Editorial Reviews

Edward Wickham and The Clerk's Group began their survey of his masses on ASV in 1994; this is the fourth installment. Wickham's nine singers admirably handle the rich, low sonorities of the 'Requiem' and 'Missa Fors seulement.' The disc also includes Ockeghem's rondeau 'Fors seulement,' upon which the Mass is based, and two arrangements of that work: one by Pierre de la Rue and one by Antoine Brumel (in his motet 'Du tout plongiet/Fors seulement').
At the height of the age of Renaissance polyphony, using one
Read more composition--either one's own or another composer's--as the basis for another was quite common and was at times a way of paying homage to another composer. In the 'Missa Fors seulement' Ockeghem uses a two-voice quotation from the beginning of his rondeau to begin both the Kyrie and Credo; other brief two-voice quotations may be found elsewhere in the mass. In the Requiem, plainchants from the Catholic Requiem Mass are used as a cantus firmus, the structural voice around which the others are composed. Read less
