Perahia and Haitink provide a wonderful, stylish alternative to the high-intensity approach. Their readings are elegant yet full of panache, shaped by the knowledge of period style that has been gained in the past half century. One finds here the thoughtful voicings and balances typical of good period-style performance, achieved without any sacrifice of virtuosity in the conception or execution of the music.
