I remember the first time I heard Susan Graham. I was doing the dishes, listening to a live broadcast (the Detroit Symphony maybe?) and she was singing Mahler, or Strauss...anyway, it doesn’t really matter; what matters is that voice. From the minute I turned the radio on to the time the broadcast ended, maybe 45 minutes later, I stood there, mouth agape, with my hands turning pruney in the dishwater. That voice, that quick vibrato, that earthy tone, the color of café au lait: it goes down so easy you want it never to stop. And on a new release from Erato, recorded live at Carnegie Hall, it darn near doesn’t. Graham rounds out a rich program of songs by Brahms, Debussy and Berg with a bevy of encores, some culled from the supermezzo’s Read more studio releases, for an hour or so of astounding music-making.

One gets the feeling that there’s nothing Graham cannot sing, from the rich and hearty Brahms Zigeunerlieder, full of everything from hot-headed jealousy to coyness to ingenuousness, to the exquisitely chiaroscuro Seven Early Songs of Alban Berg, pre-serialist and unabashedly romantic. It’s the French repertoire where she hands out the chills, however, commanding an unbelievable palette of musical and vocal colors; try on Debussy’s Proses Lyriques, or just skip to the encores for Reynaldo Hahn’s A Chloris: unaffected, warm, deep and sweet. And you can’t overlook the humor that has made Graham so popular as a Cherubino; it comes through loud, clear, and often, such as in Moises Simons’s C’est ça la vie (stolen from our last Susan Graham Hot Pick a year or so ago), or Ben Moore’s goofy send-up of life in-between soprano and alto, Sexy Lady, written especially for Graham. I wish I could have been there, and I’m awfully grateful that some guy with a microphone was. Wow. Double wow.
