Notes and Editorial Reviews

Recorded in 1952 and 1963, these SWF Radio Orchestra broadcasts featuring pianist Géza Anda make their first authorized CD appearance here. Anda’s 1952 Mozart G Major K, 453 collaboration with Hans Rosbaud preserves his clear and direct interpretation in less animated and nuanced estate compared to the more characterful DG studio recording that Anda led from the keyboard. Save for some lovely string work (the first movement exposition’s second subject, the supple pointing of the third movement variations’ opening theme), Rosbaud’s orchestral support is relatively square and diffident when measured alongside his superb Mozart collaborations with Walter Gieseking. This contrasts to the more polished orchestral framework in the 1963 Read more Mozart A Major K. 488 under Ernest Bour, where the advantage of a full time podium presence allows for a more conversational soloist/ensemble dialogue, particularly in the songful shaping of the finale’s F-sharp minor episode.

However, Rosbaud and the orchestra revel in the Ravel Left Hand Concerto’s gritty low register rumblings, scurrying woodwind passages and piercing brass punctuations, providing a colorful (if hardly note perfect) canvass upon which Anda’s impeccable, big-boned pianism can flourish. I would have expected more rhythmic elan in the march-like episodes, yet perhaps this fastidious pianist was not going to take chances under the pressure of broadcasting. Still, it’s a fascinating and (for 1952 radio) well-recorded performance of a work neither Anda nor Rosbaud recorded commercially. This release surely will appeal to piano enthusiasts with a special interest in Anda.
