Notes and Editorial Reviews

This selection ranges from the romanticism of Francisco Tárrega, the Spanish impressionism of Albéniz’s Mallorca and the neo-romanticism of the contemporary Croatian composer, Stjepan Šulek, to Rodrigo’s masterly evocation of the gardens of the Alhambra Palace in Granada and Britten’s revolutionary Nocturnal after John Dowland. Croatian guitarist Srdjan Bulat has won numerous prestigious awards, and was winner of the Certamen Tárrega 2011 which included a special award for his performance of the work of Francisco Tárrega.  A Fine Recital December 2, 2017 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "This high quality recording from 2012 is part of Naxos' Guitar Laureate series, which features leading international guitarists performing a wide variety of compositions from an equally wide variety of composers. In this case, the artist is Croatian guitarist Srdjan Bulat, who brings to the table a program of Spanish, English, and Croatian works. I found the performance to be a true delight, easy on the air, and yet demonstrating a level of virtuosity which separates the masters from the 'wannabees'. There are probably a number of classical music fans who would consider guitar recitals to exist on the fringe of serious music, if one accepts the notion that the classical guitar has limits to its depth of expression. I, for one, cannot accept such an assertion, because this recording strongly argues for the opposite view. I think it's all there- emotionally nuanced lyricism, rhythmic vitality, and an overall golden sheen to the sound of the instrument. Want some proof? Try Bulat's wonderful rendition of Francisco Tarrega's Capricho arabe; it that doesn't convince you, I'm not sure anything will. In short, this is a very fine recording, and I give it a solid recommendation." Report Abuse
