Notes and Editorial Reviews

Although his pianism is not as refined as that of Perahia, nor his technique quite as secure, Stephen Bishop offers a lovely account of the concerto, one notable for its evocation of a dreamy repose. Here, too, the conductor is Colin Davis – and once again he proves to be a superb partner. The BBC Symphony plays well, though it has a peculiar-sounding solo oboe and its violins get somewhat edgy up high. On the recording, which is excellent for 1971, the orchestra sound is slightly grainy and the piano tone not quite as brilliant as with CBS’s digital offering. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.
