EARLY ONE MORNING Louis Halsey, cond; Louis Halsey Singers; Elizabethan Singers DECCA ELOQUENCE 480 2077 (2 CDs: 139:59 Text and Translation)

Selections by PARRY, STANFORD, ELGAR, DELIUS, TRADITIONAL

The part-songs of Parry, Stanford, and Elgar might seem to be a very heavy dose of “the pure, the bright, the beautiful,” but listening to one exquisite song after another, each exquisitely sung by Louis Halsey’s singers, proved to be a delight from first Read more to last.

Perhaps one cannot in good conscience say that the repertoire on this recording is great, but it is fine, even very fine, beautiful, dignified, hopeful, and expertly crafted. These choral songs have much to say and it is said eloquently.

The second disc begins with four works of Delius, in many respects England’s musical Monet. This slightly younger composer reflects the fashionable French styles of his time; creating an Impressionistic atmosphere, rather pale in contrast to the clarity and sharp lines of his three more Victorian, more Germanically inclined colleagues. The recital closes with a group of superbly arranged folk songs whose character and spirit are not lost at the hands of the venerable Vaughan Williams, Holst, Britten, and Tippett. In fact much is gained. They seem to illuminate already perfectly formed objects, exposing their depths and highlighting their shape, tone, and texture.

Our community of serious record collectors will understand the great pleasure of sitting down to a new recording, of being carried away by its beauty, and of hoping that the next movement or the next song will not be the last.
