Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Accademia Bizantina continues its cycle of Vivaldi's celebrated L'Estro armonico (type Q8548 in Search Reviews for a review of Concertos 1-6) with equal stylishness and expressive aplomb. For instance, in the highly diverse outer Allegros of the Eighth concerto violinists Stefano Montanari and Fiorenza De Donatis judiciously vary dynamics and alter momentum, creating a captivating, animated interplay especially with the many rugged passages in the lower strings. Montanari's blistering solos in the final Allegro of the Ninth Concerto are equally thrilling, though his more even-tempered performance with the ensemble in the opening Allegro of the 12th Concerto impresses even more. Here soloist and ensemble unite in an exceptionally Read more spirited display, beautifully balancing fluency and pomp. Similar attention to detail informs the ensemble's performances of the other subtler (though no less virtuosic) movements. Their negotiation of the measured pulse and bloom of the brief inner Largo of the 10th Concerto, as well as their treatment of the complex fugues of the second-movement Adagio e spiccato of the 11th Concerto, are especially dazzling. In sum, these are world-class performances on par with the best of the many period and modern-instrument cycles available today.
