Notes and Editorial Reviews

Ruggles, Ives, Copland: yes, these are obviously the composers for a collection of Americana... Angels turns out to be an area of rather four-square dissonant harmony laid out for muted trumpets and trombones only. I do not begin to claim to know what the music of the angels is like in reality; but I would be surprised if it were like this.

Ives, too, is here both in brass and in mountainous mood: From the Steeples and the Mountains is scored for trumpet, trombone, and (reasonably!) church bells. The two brass play a vigorous counterpoint with each other, helped (I think) by some effective doubling up; the church bells, beginning in the far distance, surround the brass playing without ever seeming quite to live up to the
Read more exclamation mark of Ives's epigraph "From the steeples—the Bells!— then the Rocks on the Mountain begin to shout".

Finally the youngest of the composers writes the simplest of the music: Copland allowing, in his Quiet City, the trumpet a lyrical say in things, alongside the cor anglais and the gentle string backing. Always a good piece, its placing at the end of the record side after the grandiloquent Ruggles and Ives lends a special enhancement to its qualities.

The playing of the Buffalo Philharmonic is everywhere strong...
