Notes and Editorial Reviews

Louis Kentner's Liszt playing grew more expressive and characterful in the 1950s and '60s in contrast to his younger, more reticent shellac-era counterpart. Yet while Kentner's Liszt 78s generally benefit from well-balanced sonics, his Vox output tends to be drably engineered by comparison. That said, this collection runs the gamut from flamboyant transcriptions and heroic virtuoso fare to more introspective mood pieces and the stark, enigmatic sound world of the late works, and finds Kentner operating with total stylistic authority and a palpable sense of where the music is going.

The opening salvo, Harmonies poétiques et réligieuses, is a case in point. This early work from 1834 was later revised for a
Read more collection under the same name and given a new title, Pensée des morts. Occasionally Kentner's security turns complacent, and he'll overpedal or apply rubatos that are more "stock in trade" than purposeful, such as in his unusually brisk treatment of the Benediction de Dieu dans la solitude, his slapdash moments in the otherwise heroically scaled B minor Ballade, or the speed-ups and smudges in the Faust Waltz transcription.

Yet there's nothing remotely casual about Kentner's scintillation and control throughout the Valse de Concert based on motives from Donizetti's Lucia et Parisiana, or the Don Juan Fantasy's growling, massively drawn out introduction and perfectly nuanced downward glissandos. What's important is that the playing of past Lisztian masters ought to be accessible. For this reason alone I thank Arkivmusic.com's on-demand reprint program for making this 1992 "Vox Legends" reissue available again.
