Notes and Editorial Reviews

Michael Endres’ cultivated musicianship and virtuosity have graced some truly outstanding and sonically gorgeous German Radio productions that have found their way to CD, such as the pianist’s Arnold Bax, Carl Maria von Weber, and W.A. Mozart cycles issued on the Oehms label. Capriccio now bundles Endres’ 1993/97 cycles encompassing Schubert’s “complete” piano sonatas and dances together in a budget-priced, space-saving boxed set. I put quotation marks around the word “complete” because astute Schubertians will notice the absence of certain incomplete works and sonata movements available elsewhere. What’s important, however, is Endres’ artistry.

every waltz, landler, menuet, gallop, and polonaise with tasteful nuances and rubatos that never lose their lilting impetus. Listen, for example, to the silky, elegantly pointed double notes and controlled sentiment he brings to the two D. 769 German Dances, not to mention his seamless yet logical segues from one piece to the next in larger groups like the 20 D. 146 Waltzes. The sonatas stand out for their ideal tempos and freedom from eccentricities, although there are plenty of individual touches, such as the pianist coyly easing into the G major D. 894’s finale, the slightly held back A major D. 959 Scherzo’s deft interplay of legato and detached articulations, and the B-flat D. 960 finale’s joyful lightness offset by harshly accented unison G-naturals as if the grim reaper had crashed an innocent tea party. Also hear the inflected kick to the B major D. 575 Finale’s upbeats, and notice how the ravishing and songful phrasing stays with you long after you stop listening to Endres’ A major D. 664 Sonata.
To be sure, collectors will understandably cling to Brendel’s gaunt, Beethovenian Vanguard recording of D. 958, Richter’s archetonic D major D. 850, the Kempff Schubert cycle’s singular half-tints and pedaling gradations, Uchida’s dazzlingly executed variation movement in D. 845, or Stephen Hough’s breathtaking hand independence in the A minor D. 784 finale. Yet no other Schubert piano collection on the market offers Endres’ consistent level of satisfaction.
