Say's second recording allows us not only to learn more about this young Turkish-born virtuoso's approach to piano, but also to make a focused study of Bach's assimilation of, and influence on, the varieties of classical music in different European contexts. Bach pays tribute to French dance forms in his Suite, and to the influence of Vivaldi in this Concerto. In turn, Bach was celebrated in the 19th century through resetting of his compositions by composers from Hungary (Liszt) and Italy (Busoni), who in the process reveal their own musical signatures.
As for the player himself, Say deliciously deploys his technique in the 'French Suite,' displaying graceful balance and a fluid, at times almost harpsichord-like touch that seems

well-fitted to the form. The pianist's lightness seems to encourage him to hurry a bit through the 'Italian Concerto,' but also helps him invest the Andante with airy mystery and the Presto with palpable joy. Say goes on to prove himself capable of following the virtuoso model built into Liszt's interpretation, and of sustaining the extended majesty of the Busoni. The selection from 'The Well-tempered Clavier'--familiar outside the classical repertoire as the harmonic foundation for Gounod's setting for the vocal-recital favorite "Ave Maria"--makes for a tender finish to this set.
