Notes and Editorial Reviews

In 2001, the iconoclastic Peter Sellars mounted a staged production of the Bach cantatas BWV 82 ("Ich habe genug") and 199 ("Mein Herze schwimmt in Blut"). The ever-controversial director's starkly graphic concept drew mixed reviews. There was, however, nearly universal praise for the remarkable performances by mezzo-soprano Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, along with Craig Smith leading the Orchestra of Emmanuel Music. Thankfully, they have committed them to disc.
The cantatas are monumental works filled with some of the most glorious music imaginable. They require a singer possessed not only of exceptional technique but also of the ability to effectively communicate the message of deep faith at the heart of these compositions. Hunt Lieberson,
Read more a consummate interpreter of Bach's music, shows that she's well prepared for the challenge. She applies an uncanny combination of vocal technique and interpretive acumen to these sublime masterpieces and delivers powerful performances imbued with intelligence and emotional intensity carried along by the rich tonality of her marvelous voice. Smith and the orchestra, steeped in the Bach cantatas, provide outstanding instrumental support. Oboist Peggy Pearson deserves special praise for her brilliant accounts of the solo parts in both works. It's no exaggeration to pronounce this album a thing of beauty, as near to perfection as can be reasonably expected. Read less
