Notes and Editorial Reviews

REVIEWS:
BBC Music (5/98, p.69) - Performance: 5 (out of 5) - Sound: 5 (out of 5) - "...Thielemann indulges in some quite remarkable idiosyncrasies. The result is compelling and, to my ears, entirely convincing: this is Wagner conducting of the highest order....Thielemannn's first complete Wagner opera on record, when it finally comes, will be a landmark event."

A CRITIQUE April 30, 2013 By ROBERT E.  FOX (OCALA, FL) See All My Reviews "CRITICISM ACCORDING TO THE DICTIONARY IMPLIES JUDGEMENT (IF NOT FINDING FAULT). I LL TRY TO FIND FAULT BUT IT WONT BE EASY. UPON FIRST HEARING, THE MEISTERSINGER SEEMED TOO BRIGHT. THAT COULD BE THE RECORDING SITE, A STUDIO IN COLLINGSWOOD N. J. I SHOULD LIKE TO HEAR THIS DISC TO HAVE BEEN RECORDED IN THE PHILADELPHIA HOME CONCERT HALL. THE LOHENGRIN OVERTURE TO ACT ONE SURELY SHOWS OFF THE REPUTED PHILADELPHIA STRINGS FOR WHAT THEY ARE. BUT , WHATS LOHENGRIN WITHOUT A HELDENTENOR PROCLAIMING MY NAME IS LOHENGRIN AND PARSIFAL IS MY FATHER. THE PARSIFAL ALWAYS MAKE ME THINK OF THE MECHANICS OF ASCENDING AND DESCENDING SCALES. WAGNER USES THIS ALL THROUGHOUT PARSIFAL AND ALWAYS MAKE ME THINK OF THE SIMPLICITY OF THE NOTES AND HOW HE COMBINES THAT WITH SUCH GORGEOUS MELODY. BUT, THE GOOD FRIDAY SPELL WITHOUT A BASS SINGING WITH AND OVER THE ORCHESTRA MISSES SOMETHING. SO, MY ONLY CRITICISM IS OF DG FOR NOT HAVING A HELDENTENOR FOR LOHENGRIN AND A BASS FOR PARSIFAL" Report Abuse
