"The 32" as you've never heard them October 24, 2017 By William S. (Renton, WA) See All My Reviews "My first complete set of "the 32" was on Seraphim ("Angels of the highest order"). It didn't particularly impress me, and I always wondered why listeners gushed over Schnabel. "There's nothing to equal him", etc. Well, half a century makes a big difference in one's perceptions. There are other good Beethoven cycles (Richard Good and Bernard Roberts come to mind), but what makes Schnabel outstanding is that he sounds significantly more like Beethoven than anyone else. If you'd never heard a Beethoven piano sonata, you'd quickly recognize that this music is from LvB -- the intensity, the passion, the occasionally slightly crazy quality. Yet these are also wholly Classical performances. Schnabel absolutely avoids romanticizing these works. Hard to believe -- but true. The sound is generally very good, with (mostly) effective de-clicking -- but not filtering -- that renders the piano's tone more natural and lifelike. (Pops and clicks generate anharmonic sidebands that badly foul the sound.) An essential recording for anyone's collection." Report Abuse
