Notes and Editorial Reviews

"The beauty and grandeur of the setting exactly match the glories of the music, superbly interpreted. It is good to find the young Bryn Terfel among the soloists, one of an outstanding team. Among the bonus items is an illuminating 20 minute introduction by Gardiner himself, also filmed in Venice. He outlines the music and its composition, with a brief portrait of the composer, and emphasizes his own devotion to this of all works, which played a key part in his emergence as a conductor, evoking a sense of joy in him whenever he returns to it."

!BEAUTIFUL TO SEE AND HEAR. BUT WHAT DOES IT MEA January 23, 2013 By James Komar (Saskatoon, SK) See All My Reviews "Arkiv's very inviting review of this production is true, as far as it goes. But it does a disservice to the potential listener who does not know the vocal text. While a libretto is provided, it is not keyed to what is happening on screen. Once you lose your place in the singing on screen, it is just about impossible to find it again in the libretto. What was sorely needed for listener comfort was subtitles, and there were none: something the reviewer for Arkiv Music neglected to mention. Frankly, I am surprised that Archiv Produktion would sully its sterling reputation by putting its name to something like this. It is an insult to the composer, the performers, and to the reputation of Archiv Produktion itself. But perhaps it was a joy to some of the stockholders for the few dollars of extra profit realized by eliminating the expense of subtitles. I no longer purchase vocal CDs or DVDs unless the review makes it clear that sung texts or subtitles are provided as applicable." Report Abuse
Sexy Sacred Music November 28, 2011 By Christian Withers (San Antonio, TX) See All My Reviews "Possibly the most gorgeous recording of sacred music ever! This piece synthesizes Renaissance polyphony with Baroque basso-continuo style for a sound that is somehow simultaneously spiritual and sensual. The video element is also important in this DVD: you will see beautiful interior shots of the Basilica di San Marco in Venice. But more importantly, you will view the performers moving around and forming different small groups and larger ensembles for each number, from solos, duos and trios to the full choir & orchestra (tutti). Even the placement of the groups within the space is important, and the video helped me understand the structure of the work more fully. This attention to historical detail is why, despite other excellent recordings, this one still deserves to be first choice. " Report Abuse
