Notes and Editorial Reviews
Czech flautist Jana Semerádová’s new recording marks the three hundredth anniversary of the birth of the Prussian King Frederick the Great. Just as France had its Louis XIV., so Germany had Frederick II. His passionate love of music and desire to learn how to play the flute was kindled by his encounter with the virtuoso Johann Joachim Quantz. The King surrounded himself with prominent musicians of the time, with his fabled orchestra including the harpsichordist Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, the phenomenal Czech violinist František Benda and Johann Philipp Kirnberger, a pupil of Johann Sebastian Bach’s. The encounter between Bach and the King of Prussia subsequently gave rise to the famous collection Musikalisches Opfer (Musical Offering).
