I’ve previously reviewed two releases of Raisin-Dadre and Doulce Mémoire: a collection of French sacred music composed around the turn of the 16th century, some of which may have been employed to memorialize Anne of Brittany’s death (Zig-Zag 110501), and an album of selections published in Pierre Attaignant’s Danceries collections (Ricercar 294). This is simply a hefty chunk from the lighter portion of their back catalog, blithely termed “Italian Renaissance,” though it also includes an outlier in the form of one disc devoted for the most part to Morales’s setting of the Office des Ténèbres. The six albums are, in release order:

Il Libro del Cortegiano: Venezia, 1528, 1997;

Lorenzo il Magnifico, trionfo di bacco: chants de carnaval, 1449–1492, 1998;

Viva Napoli: Villanesche Canzioni, 1998;

Le Siècle du Titien: Musique à Venise: 1490–1576, 2001;

Morales: Office des Ténèbres: Lamentations pour le samedi saint, 2002;

Leonardo de Vinci: L’Harmonie du monde, 2003.

Four of these (again excepting the Morales, and the disc of Florentine carnival songs) are simply thematic pegs upon which to hang a variety of selections reflecting a generalized time and place. This allows for a variety of contrasting timbres, something that admirably suits the talents of Doulce Mémoire, whose members include vocalists, the traditional instruments associated with both soft and loud ensembles, and a percussionist.

The Ténèbres disc is another matter. It combines three out of four Lamentation settings found in the 1564 Venetian publication of Lamentationi di Morales , which also includes five other settings that are actually by Costanzo Festa. These are interspersed with plainchant responses, motets (including recorder arrangements for Peccantem me quotidie and Manus tuas —the only instrumentals on the disc), and the anonymous, fauxbourdon -treated Miserere in strictly vertical counterpoint. The selection of surrounding material is judiciously chosen, though I admit that, given the great amount of music by Morales that has yet to be recorded, I would have accepted less of the roughly 22 minutes of plainchant on this disc, in exchange for more by the composer. Heresy, I know.

For the rest, if you’ve ever seen Doulce Mémoire live or heard one of its lighter discs, you know what to expect. There’s energy, discipline, technical proficiency of a high quality, and the kind of planning expected from an ensemble used to the pacing and variety of live concerts. Percussionist Bruno Caillat improvises attractive, shifting cross-rhythmic patterns. I have only one reservation, and it concerns soprano Marie-Claude Vallin. She is featured as a soloist on several cuts in the Book of the Courtier: Venice, 1528 album. Her voice lacks resonance and body, with just adequate breath support, and occasional pitch problems exacerbated by her narrow tone. Elsewhere, however, the lineup is strong, with many of the same artists featured throughout, and the programs make for good, individual entertainment.

The liner notes are frustrating. Nearly all of the extensive documentation is spent on cities, important political leaders, historical events—in short, everything except a discussion of the music. Context is essential, but the music should get its share of the focus. Fortunately, texts and translations are included, and the sound, though reverberant, doesn’t conceal the shape of the works. Definitely recommended.
