The career of Josef Suk is marked by waves of deeply serious and weighty compositions. As a student of Dvorak at the Prague Conservatory, he was told by his instructor to, in essence, lighten up. The serious scholar's career did include joyful moments, such as those that produced 'A Summer Tale' and the 'Fantastic' Scherzo. Suk's sweeping themes and Romantic lyricism grab listeners from the outset, bringing them to the sweet inner melodies. 'A Summer Tale' is a musical poem that vividly portrays the composer's shifting moods. From despondent to hopeful to whole again, critics agree it is a moving portrait of the curative power of nature. The 'Fantastic' Scherzo contains an even more upbeat theme. Its dance-like melody soars weightlessly, punctuated intermittently by a furious percussion. The juxtaposition of light and dark within the piece gives the music a playfulness that shows that Suk's versatility can suit any mood. |
