Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897–1957) is regarded as one of Hollywood’s most famous film composers. His opera ‘Die tote Stadt’ became a resounding success immediately. The libretto, a
Read more many-layered and disturbingly morbid love drama between Paul, mourning for his dead wife Marie, and Marie’s spitting image Marietta, is based on the 1892 symbolist cult novel ‘Burges-la-Morte’ by Georges Rodenbach. The score rises to this fantastical material by using montage techniques: lyric episodes, salon romances and Italian arias, embedded in a symphonic context, are woven together into a composition which reviews said induced a drug-like effect.  Incredibly Bad! January 25, 2012 By L. Schroeder (Lincolnwood, IL) See All My Reviews "A beautiful opera spoiled by bad balance between voice and orchestral volumes, bizarre setting, and acting so clumsy and exaggerated that it was painful to watch. The tenor who sang the lead was embarrassing to behold as he stumbled around the stage clutching a doll. His housekeeper had a decent voice, was made up like a midwestern school teacher, and sang clutching a wrecking bar! No one who has seen a decent performance of this work could watch this one painlessly." Report Abuse
