Composers: Strauss, R. Title: Die Frau ohne Schatten (2 DVDs) Artists: Moser/Struder/Hale/Marton etc, Sir Georg Solti, Wiener Philharmoniker International release date: October 2002 Catalogue number: 071425 Label: Decca
Sir Georg Solti was regarded as without peer in Strauss opera, and his early 90s audio recording of Die Frau ohne Schatten immediately established itself as the reference version. Complementing this celebrated CD recording is Solti's powerful video performance of Strauss's mystical fable, in Götz Friedrich's magnificent staging for the Salzburg Festival, filmed in the summer of 1992. This performance also presents (at Solti's insistence) the opera uncut.
The exceptionally wide stage of
Salzburg was perfectly suited to the grandeur of Friedrich's conception, while the intimacy of Hofmannsthal's drama was vividly recreated by an impressive international cast that included Cheryl Studer and Eva Marton, as well as an early stage appearance from the young Bryn Terfel, as the Spirit Messenger. The widescreen TV direction was in the veteran hands of Brian Large.
This is not only an outstanding Die Frau, but the only recording of the opera on DVD (now or indeed in the likely future). As well as the original CD-quality stereo, the DVD newly offers a six-channel surround sound in the premier DTS format, as well as subtitling in English, French, Italian, Spanish and Chinese.
