A Winner. Sensational!! June 11, 2012 By BURTON A jONES, JR. (Pearland, TX) See All My Reviews "I cannot agree more with the review by L. Winn. This is by far the one to have. I have 7 dvd performances and this is the best, but followed closely by the 2 Malfitano recordings and the one by Stratas. The Stratas is very good, marred only by snipping out of the removal of the 7th veil. Ewing is definitely the one to have. Get it before someone decides it is too old and retires it." Report Abuse
This cast is perfect February 29, 2012 By L. Winn (One Hundred Mile House, BC) See All My Reviews "The three recommended versions, cannot compare to the small staged size , compact perferfomance of this wonderfully old fashioned staging of this opera. First I have to single out Maria Ewing immediately, with such a breathtaking performance of her sheer actors attunement to this part,.never going overboard as some of the later productions have.
Her petulence in the scene demanding Johns head is superpb only out done by that early recording of the Kristol Goltz's Salome. Ewings insight into this young mad girl is ideally realized in every sweat bead she has to wipe away from her face. Her Voice? Better than most I have heard. Her appearance , at first , is off putting, because of her very wide mouth , but that aspect along with her full lips gives credence to her later petulence. She tops off the role with a stunning nude scene after her 7 veiled dance. To me this is the best of the recorded Salomes. John , rising out of the cistern, almost nude in his whilte alabaster painted skin, is also stunning and one can see why Salome is smitten with him. His voice is glorious.
Herod almost takes the scenes away from everyone he sings with , whth his exciteable , screaming voice. I loved his portrayal, his sincere lustful yearning for Salomes young body. which makes, at the end of the opera, his snapping demand for her death all the more tragic , as his delusional perception of her youthful beauty is destroyed by her apparent madness. Get this one out of all of them."
