ROSER OG KJERLIGHED: Inspired by Norway Helene Wold (sop); Per Andreas Tønder (bar); Eugene Asti (pn); Vegard Lund (gtr) LAWO 1029 (73:42 Text and Translation)

Selections by H. RUNG, F. RUNG, LANGE-MÜLLER, KJERULF, MØLLER IBSEN, BLOM

All of the music on this CD is of the plain folk-type music popular in Scandinavian countries during the late 19th and early 20th centuries (even though one of the composers Read more represented here, Lars Møller Ibsen, was born in the 18th century). The composers are both Norwegian and Danish, and with the sole exception of Kjerulf, whose music sounds based on the Lieder of Schubert and Schumann, the melodic structure is simple, folklike, and repetitive, and the harmonic base tonal and simple. This may suggest a delightful light-music CD, and to some extent this is true, but neither singer sounds particularly interested in what he or she is singing. Helene Wold has a very pretty timbre but an extraordinarily wide wobble on sustained notes. Per Andreas Tønder sounds like a folk singer, which is to say he uses a natural, mouth-based tone production with neither resonance nor smoothness in his sound. I was astonished to discover that he has sung operatic roles onstage. In their few duets, Wold is livelier than Tønder. If there is one adjective that best describes the overall performance approach, it is low-key.

The songs of Kjerulf are interesting, if not major works, and bear listening to for their charming and subtle construction. The solo piano pieces by Frederik Rung have an interesting, Grieg-like construction about them, and they are played very well by Eugene Asti. The same composer’s guitar solos, played softly and unobtrusively by Vegard Lund, are similar in design. The final song, a somewhat rousing patriotic piece by Christian Blom (“Sacred land, o fatherland, Norway, of thee I sing” stuff) is just about the most fun piece on the disc.
