"...I find that the production, along with Brian Large’s excellent direction for the TV screen, tends to humanize the characters and bring us closer to them emotionally. Then there is Meier’s Isolde—surely one of the great operatic portrayals of our time. Whereas West makes a great deal out of vocal equipment that is inherently limited, Meier has a uniquely beautiful instrument at her disposal. She may have begun as a mezzo, but by the time this Tristan performance came about, the top notes held no terror for her, and she soars through the role. In addition, there is hardly a more complete actress on the operatic stage now (both vocally and physically)—every detail of her complex character-painting is intelligently drawn without ever seeming mannered. The other great asset to this Tristan is Mehta, who demonstrates, as he did in Chicago’s Ring some years ago that he is a major Wagnerian. His conducting is tender and impassioned, incisive and poetic, and he maintains the line from beginning to end. He knows just how to lean into a phrase to make it speak. Together, he and Meier make a Liebestod that stays long in the memory...The orchestra plays gloriously, the sound quality is stunning, as is the video quality." - Henry Fogel, FANFARE
