Notes and Editorial Reviews

Hardly any other soprano in opera history can look back on such an extensive and flawless artistic career as Mirella Freni. She was born in 1935 in Modena, a year which would become particularly productive as regards the town's fame for singing: Mirella had always said, that as a baby she had shared the same wet nurse as the infant Luciano Pavarotti, and even if this would not have been true, then at least this anecdote was quite appropriately invented. Mirella had found her way onto the stage much earlier than her "bosom-brother." She performed for the first time at home in the Modena Opera house as Carmen before she was even twenty. In the 1970s, the period from which these recordings originated, she was not only at her best singing age, Read more between 35 and 45, but had also acquired a considerable amount of international experience. It should also be mentioned that the conductor for these performances was Leone Magiera, who was also Freni's first husband and the father of her only child. Thus the 1970s are the years of her maturity. After having gradually left behind her Mozart and the coloratura-rich repertoire of 19th century Italy, yet not quite having reached the "difficult" or the traditional repertoire still new to the Italian soprano (such as Tchaikovsky), the prima donna was at the height of her "lyrical." It is from this period that these recordings are drawn. Read less
