Notes and Editorial Reviews

Celebrating their 21st anniversary this year, Marcel Peres' Ensemble Organum have made their own, and not inconsiderable, contribution to the development of early music on disc. Musique d'abord, Harmonia Mundi's superbudget price series, has just returned their 1989 survey of 'Ambrosian' plainsong, Chants de l'eglise Milanaise, to the catalogue. Despite the introspective, surface calm, this is music with a volatile, often violent, history attached to it and with discernible contemporary cultural resonance still in the alpine valleys of northern Italy and southern Switzerland. Peres melds ancient practice with 'living sources' to return a subtle but discernibly authentic accent that owes much to the Orthodox traditions of the church in the Read more East.
