Notes and Editorial Reviews

This recording recently appeared in a Decca Trio collection of the complete Rachmaninov Piano Concertos (type Q6237 in Search Reviews), but it's good to have it available singly as well--the Second is Rachmaninov's most popular concerto, and Vladimir Ashkenazy is one of its finest interpreters on disc. While his earlier rendition with Kondrashin presented an angrier, grittier profile, this 1970 performance wonderfully balances the dark and light aspects of Rachmaninov's score. Ashkenazy plays beautifully throughout, nowhere more so than in the serene slow movement. But he also offers technical brilliance in the finale, and especially in the coupled Paganini Rhapsody. Fellow Rachmaninovian André Previn proves an ideal partner as he leads the Read more London Symphony in a lushly adorned, generously Romantic accompaniment. Decca's sound remains clear and spacious, with good piano/orchestral balance; only some very slight distortion at the tutti sections betrays its age. All told, this is an easy choice for those wanting a first-rate, low-cost version of these works.
