Notes and Editorial Reviews

Acclaimed soprano Barbara Hendricks lends her voice and musical intelligence to what amounts to a concentrated survey of the world of operetta. Hendricks makes some obvious choices with regard to composers and works, but also some less expected ones. She ably represents the venerable Viennese school with selections from the works of Karl Zeller, Robert Stolz, and the two masterworks that dominated the era: Franz Lehar's 'The Merry Widow' and Johann Strauss' 'Die Fledermaus.'
Hendricks' renditions of arias by Jacques Offenbach and Andre Messager provide representative examples of the French opera bouffe and opera comique respectively, and she demonstrates that for all intent and purposes the music of Gilbert and Sullivan is English comic

Composers such as Sigmund Romberg and Victor Herbert carried on the tradition in the U.S. where operetta gradually evolved into the musical play. Hendricks emphasizes the development with her rendition of "I could have danced all night" from Lerner and Loewe's musical 'My Fair Lady,' a work that elegantly wears its influences. Read less
