Notes and Editorial Reviews

Opera composer (mostly) Giovanni Simone (Simon) Mayr’s Concerto bergamasco is one of the most delightful combinations of conceptual originality and outright plagiarism that you will ever hear. Scored for solo flute, piccolo, clarinet, basset horn, and full orchestra, its four movements introduce each instrument in sequence, and then they all come together in the jolly final theme and variations. Along the way, we find a slow movement that turns Haydn’s Clock Symphony into a clarinet concerto, and an opening flute concerto movement in which the second subject (first sound clip) is lifted straight from the same section of the first movement of Beethoven’s Second Symphony (second sound clip)–in the same key, no less (D major). It’s a hoot. Read more />
The Keyboard Concerto in C major, here played on a harpsichord (although a forte piano would be more appropriate), offers more than a passing glance at Mozart and Haydn, while the concluding, single movement Trio Concertante for three violins and orchestra is simply unclassifiable. All of the soloists are good to excellent, especially the woodwind players in the Concerto bergamasco. In the concerto, harpsichordist/conductor Franz Hauk can’t resist giving his own part excessive prominence in the orchestral tuttis, but there’s nothing wrong with his playing as such, or the sound of the orchestra. The engineering is full and warm, but a bit cavernous when the trumpets and drums are playing. This is just plain fun.
