Notes and Editorial Reviews

Christa Ludwig’s superlative EMI recording of Mahler Lieder has been overshadowed by Janet Baker’s for this same label, but excellent as Baker is, pushed to choose I would probably take Ludwig. She was at the height of her powers when these recordings were made in the late 50s and 60s, and the while the five songs with Klemperer leave out two of the Rückert-Lieder, Liebst du um Schönheit (which Mahler did not orchestrate) and the relatively slight Blicke Mir nicht in die Lieder are more than superseded by Wo die schönen Trompeten blasen and Das irdische Leben.

Indeed, this latter song, conducted by Klemperer with truly sinister deliberation, illustrates Ludwig’s art particularly well. Listen to how sensitively
Read more she characterizes the starving child’s complaints and the mother’s calmer replies. This is great Lieder singing, subtle but vivid, never crudely exaggerated, the emotion projected through voice with artless simplicity and directness. Both Adrian Boult (Songs of a Wayfarer) and André Vandernoot (Kindertotenlieder) also accompany quite ably, the Philharmonia sounds marvelous, and the sonics have held up very well. This disc is a classic, make no mistake.
