Notes and Editorial Reviews

Schumann wrote two violin sonatas; both technically demanding, they couldn’t be more different in character. The short, passionate first sonata contrasts sharply with the large-scale, melancholy second work, where the piano and the violin part intermingle. This provides a foretaste of the Late Romantic sensuousness typical of Szymanowski’s magical Myths. This CD combines the 1975 recording of the two Schumann sonatas with repertoire rarities that only became known to a wider public thanks to the violinist Ulf Hoelscher.
