Notes and Editorial Reviews

Paul Engel was born into a well-known family of musicians. In Munich, he studied composition (with Gunther Bialas and Wilhelm Killmayer), conducting and piano. Since 1987, he was been working as a free lance composer. Chamber music has been central to his output since 1978, when his involvement with a piano trio led him to a deep appreciation of the chamber works of the great 18th century Viennese masters. "Their clear structures and the tonal peculiarities of the instruments then available represented for me a source of endless fascination. From that grew the idea to combine musical material from that epoch with the mental and emotional aspects of the music of our time." Sonogramm I was composed for the soloists who have recorded it here. Read more Engel's fifth Piano Trio Calliope's descent from Olympus is based on an imaginary meeting between the Greek god Zeus and his muse of epic poetry, Calliope (known as the "fair voiced"). Violinist Christos Kanettis was born in 1960 in Greece. He studied there and in Vienna and at Juilliard with Dorothy DeLay. A citizen of the U.S. and Greece, he lives in Austria and since 1996, holds teaching positions at the University "Mozarteum" in Salzburg and at the State Conservatory, Innsbruck. Alfons Kontarsky was born in 1932 in Germany. He studied in Cologne and Hamburg. In 1955, with his brother Alois, he was awarded the first prize for Piano Duo in the ARD competition in Munich. This marked the start of the international career of the "Klavierduo Kontarsky." He has been a Professor at the Music Universities in Cologne and Munich. Since 1986, he holds a chair for piano and chamber music at the University "Mozarteum," Salzburg. Read less
