Pleasantly Surprised July 1, 2014 By Keith Messersmith (Ashland, PA) See All My Reviews "Never heard any thing from The Tsars Bride so I was pleasantly surprised when hearing this recording. The recording itself belies its age for the sound was refurbished. Melodya was noted for good performances with less than optimum sound, although the were perfectly listenable. Only one regret, no libretto. Arkiv should always with their opera recordings designate whether the recoding has a libretto or not. Luckily I have a friend who has the original LP release, and he let me borrow the libretto to follow. I played it first without knowing what was happening, and enjoyed the music very much. Galina Vichnevskaya is always enjoyable. Great find; great bargain. Buy and enjoy." Report Abuse
An almost perfect Gem June 20, 2014 By Joseph Erdeljac (West Chester, PA) See All My Reviews "Here is a truly wonderful recording of an almost forgotten Rimsky-Korsakov masterpiece. The cast is outstanding and the orchestra is too. It is a shame that we in America are not familiar with these great Russian singers. The opera itself is a true Gem and the synopsis is good, but the translation into English is sometimes rough. The one drawback is that this set does not come with a full Libretto and translation. Putting that aside one listening is not enough. I want to listen to it over and over again." Report Abuse
