Notes and Editorial Reviews

The emphasis in Karajan’s accounts in this, his last of the Brahms symphonies, is on power – so much so that one occasionally feels as though one is riding a freight train through the pieces, or at least a Mack truck. The conductor dispenses with repeats and draws a voluptuous sound from the Berlin players, producing textures that tend to be heavy, but are clear most of the time. While there are a few patches of rough ensemble and here and there some out-of-tune playing in the brass, there are many nice touches as well.
The recordings are close up and big, with a decent ambience, though the balances seem to have been done mainly in studio. – Ted Libbey, author of The NPR Guide to Building a Classical CD Collection.
